Termination of an electricity contract
Are you wondering how to terminate your electricity contract? If you need to cancel your contract with us, you will find information below on how to do so and when cancellation is possible. We also explain how to terminate the contract in the event of a death.
How do I terminate an electricity contract?
- You do not need to terminate your electricity contract when switching suppliers.
- When you switch electricity suppliers, your new supplier will terminate your contract on your behalf. This process takes an average of 14 days.
- If you wish to terminate your contract due to moving out, you can do so via our OmaSähkö customer portal, by calling our customer service, or by sending us an email.
- Note: Even if we do not respond to the termination request immediately, it will take effect on your desired date, provided it falls within the required notice period.

Can an electricity contract be terminated online?
You can terminate your electricity contract in our OmaSähkö customer portal.
You can find the termination option on the home page under the “Moving” menu: “End your contract.”
Can a fixed-term electricity contract be terminated?
A fixed-term electricity contract remains in effect until the end of the fixed term. A fixed-term electricity contract cannot be terminated early. A fixed-term electricity contract can only be terminated in connection with a move.
Breach of contract
So-called “moving schemes” are not permitted. If we have reason to suspect such a scheme, we reserve the right to verify whether a move has actually taken place. In the event of a breach of contract, we are entitled to claim compensation for the outstanding amounts resulting from the premature termination of the agreement.
A “moving scheme” refers to terminating a contract on the grounds of moving and entering into a new contract in the name of another person living in the same household, without an actual move taking place.

When a fixed-term electricity contract is nearing its end
- Once the fixed-term period—the period of the binding contract—ends, you are free to change both your electricity contract and your supplier.
- We will send you an offer for a new electricity contract 90 days before your current one expires. You can accept the offer or switch to a different contract.
- It is advisable to actively select a new electricity contract no later than one month before your current contract ends; otherwise, you will automatically be placed on an open-ended contract.
Right of withdrawal and cancellation before the electricity contract begins
If you have entered into an electricity contract remotely, you have a 14-day right of withdrawal. You can cancel the electricity contract by filling out the following form.
Note: Once the reconsideration period has expired, standard contract terms apply to the termination of electricity contracts.
Contesting an electricity contract
Did you receive an unsolicited electricity contract confirmation in the mail following a call from an electricity retailer? This means the supplier switch process—transferring you to the new electricity retailer—has been initiated. Even if 14 days have already passed since the call, you can still halt the switching process and prevent the contract from being finalized.
Terminating an electricity contract when moving
Some electricity companies allow it, others require it, and some do not permit you to keep your current electricity contract when moving. With Kerava Energia, you cannot keep your old contract when you move, but we would be happy to set up a new contract for your new address.
Terminating your electricity contract in connection with a move is therefore permitted. In other words, when you move and register at a new address (meeting the Finnish Tax Administration’s definition of a move), you can terminate even a fixed-term electricity contract without a penalty fee.
Tips for terminating contracts when moving
- Start by terminating your electricity network contract with the network company. Please note that a simple change of address is not sufficient.
- Terminate your electricity contract as early as possible before moving (ideally a month in advance, but at least 14 days).
- Arrange a new electricity contract for your new address. An electricity network contract is established automatically when you sign a contract with an electricity supplier.
Terminate an electricity contract in the event of death
- A beneficiary of the estate must contact both the electricity network company and the electricity sales company to report the death of the relative. We do not receive this information from other sources.
- Obtain a power of attorney from all beneficiaries of the estate if you wish to terminate the electricity contract. The electricity contract can remain in the name of the estate until the estate inventory has been completed.
- In practice, the estate’s contracts remain in force until the beneficiaries terminate them or a new resident enters into an electricity contract and an electricity transmission contract for the property.
- For an apartment, the beneficiaries can terminate the electricity contract by notifying us. However, for a detached house that also has an electricity network contract and a fixed electricity connection, we do not recommend terminating the electricity contract until the new owner and/or new resident is known. Terminating the electricity network contract results in the disconnection of the service, and a fee based on our connection price list is charged to open a new connection.
