All old meters to be replaced

All old electricity meters in the Kerava and Sipoo electricity network area will be replaced with new ones.

The meter replacement process began with a pilot phase in February 2025, and the main mass replacement will follow starting in June. The replacements will proceed area by area across the entire electricity network. All electricity meters are scheduled to be replaced by the end of 2027.

The meter replacement is free of charge for everyone.

The replacements are being carried out in cooperation with Eltel Oy, whose skilled installers will perform the actual meter installations.

Why are electricity meters being replaced?

Like all devices, electricity meters have a lifecycle. Technological progress has inevitably overtaken many of the meters currently found in homes, and they no longer meet consumer needs regarding domestic energy use.

The number of household devices has grown enormously in recent decades, and home technology has advanced at a rapid pace. New-generation smart meters offer customers entirely new ways to monitor and manage their electricity consumption. The meters being installed in Kerava and Sipoo are domestic units manufactured by Aidon Oy.

New smart meters enable the monitoring of electricity consumption data in near real-time. A home automation interface (HAN port) allows customers to manage their home electricity consumption more efficiently, for instance, and can make it easier to take advantage of price fluctuations in spot-market electricity. Customers can optimize their electricity connection capacity using devices such as smart chargers connected to the meter.

The next major Europe-wide leap will occur when the measurement of electricity consumption shifts from the current one-hour interval to 15-minute intervals. Such 15-minute interval measurement is not possible with older meters.

New smart meters benefit not only electricity end-users but also the electricity grid itself. More precise measurement helps identify grid issues, such as peak loads and power outages. Fault management improves as data is transmitted directly from the metering device to the fault repair process.

It is not possible to refuse the meter replacement. Under Section 22 of the Electricity Market Act and Sections 1 and 3 of Chapter 6 of the Decree on Metering, the grid operator is required to install new remote metering equipment compliant with the decree for its customers. Furthermore, in accordance with the General Terms and Conditions (VPE2024, clauses 6.3 and 7.1; STE2024, clauses 5.2 and 6.1), the customer must grant the installer access to the meter to carry out the necessary equipment installation. Preventing the work from being performed may result in the disconnection of the electricity supply.

Notice!

Once the meter has been replaced, the property’s electricity supply must be disconnected solely by using the button on the electricity meter designed for switching the power on and off. If the power is turned off by any other means, the network company will receive a fault notification, resulting in an unnecessary service visit.

Points to note after installation

During the replacement process, the electricity supply to your property will be interrupted for 5–20 minutes. After the installation, please check that:

– the refrigerator, freezer, and residual current device (RCD) are working
– appliances connected to night-rate load control, such as the water heater and space heaters, switch on.

Please note that the time-based rate for night-time electricity always changes precisely at 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM. However, the various appliances controlled by the meter’s night-load function may switch on with a delay of up to 60 minutes starting from midnight. Despite this activation delay, energy metering at the lower rate begins at the scheduled time.

If you find that there is no electricity at the supply point, please check that the fuses are intact. In the event of a fault, please contact Eltel Networks customer service at (09) 6181 5205.

During the replacement, the electricity supply to your property will be interrupted for 5–20 minutes.
After the installation, please check that:

– power has been restored to the property
– generation is operating normally, the safety switches on the generation equipment are in the correct position, and the circuit breakers are switched on

If you notice that generation is not working normally or there is no electricity at the supply point despite the fuses/breakers being intact and switched on, please contact Eltel Networks customer service at (09) 6181 5205.

Our partner Eltel Networks Oy is responsible for the installations.

Eltel’s installers travel in Eltel vehicles and wear work uniforms.
