District heating is locally produced
Contrary to what the name might suggest, our district heating is produced locally. Heat generated at power plants is piped to customers in the Kerava and Sipoo areas in the form of hot water.
District heating warms home radiators and provides domestic hot water. The cooled water then returns to the power plant to be reheated. Because waste heat—which is generated during electricity production anyway—can be utilized for district heating, it is a more environmentally friendly and sustainable choice. Without district heating, the heat generated during electricity production would simply be lost as waste heat.
