Weather-proof electricity network at Kerava and Sipoo
Weather-proof electricity network – reliable and safe electricity distribution.
We build and maintain our electricity network in an environmentally sustainable manner.
Our electricity networks are located in Kerava and Sipoo. From the perspective of electricity distribution, these two areas differ significantly. Kerava is a small, densely populated town where the electricity network has long been almost entirely underground. Sipoo, by contrast, is a vast, sparsely populated area characterized by extensive forests and fields. In this rural setting, the electricity network still consists primarily of overhead lines.
We are working consistently to improve the reliability of electricity supply, and our goal is to have more than 60 percent of the electricity network in Sipoo converted to underground cabling by 2036.

Power outages in Sipoo are almost always caused by damage to overhead lines resulting from wind and snow. Moving power lines underground reduces the number of faults to a mere fraction of the previous level. For instance, if a customer previously experienced 10 power outages in a year, that number will drop to less than one once the network has been converted to underground cabling.
We are also systematically replacing old pole-mounted transformers with ground-mounted (pad-mounted) units. Pole-mounted transformers contain oil, which can be harmful to the soil if it leaks into the environment during a fault. Ground-mounted transformers are safer than pole-mounted ones, as they prevent any oil from reaching the ground.
