Biokvartaalisähkö

Biokvartaalisähkö is a worry-free choice. There is no fixed-term commitment, and your electricity price is reviewed four times a year – in January, April, July, and October – to reflect changes in the market.
Our renewable electricity is generated from sustainably sourced wood, primarily using wood chips made from forestry residues.

Who is a Kvartaalisähkö contract for?

A Kvartaalisähkö is a good choice for customers who do not want to commit to a fixed-term electricity contract. The contract can be terminated at any time with a 14-day notice period.

A Kvartaalisähkö contract provides more predictability for your energy costs, as the price is not subject to unexpected changes at any time. Instead, the price is updated four times a year on predetermined dates.

The Kvartaalisähkö contract is intended for customers with an annual electricity consumption of less than 50 MWh.

What is renewable electricity?

Keravan Energia’s renewable electricity is produced at the Kerava Bio Power Plant using clean wood-based fuels. Our wood fuel mainly consists of forest residue chips sourced from certified and responsibly managed forests (PEFC, FSC), as well as approximately one quarter by-products such as sawdust and bark from sawmills.

Bioenergy is a form of renewable energy that does not increase atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. When biomass is burned, the amount of carbon dioxide released is equivalent to the amount absorbed during the biomass’s natural decomposition. This carbon is then recaptured as forests continue to grow.

By replacing fossil fuels with biomass, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts associated with energy production, such as heavy metal and sulphur emissions. Using locally sourced biomass also supports energy self-sufficiency, security of supply, and creates new employment opportunities.

Price updated four times a year

The energy price of a Kvartaalisähkö is based on the market price of electricity in the electricity derivatives market. The contract price periods change four times a year: on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July, and 1 October.

The price for each period is known one month before the new price period begins:

  • The price for the first price period of the year is announced on the last day of November.
  • The price for the second price period is announced on the last day of February.
  • The price for the third price period is announced on the last day of May.
  • The price for the fourth price period is announced on the last day of August.

The price includes electricity trading costs and other associated costs, such as profile costs. Updated prices are announced at least one month before the new pricing period begins.

Where Our Electricity Comes From

5,1 % of the electricity sold by Keravan Energia is produced at our own power plants. In addition, Keravan Energia owns shares in other Finnish power plants, with electricity generated from these sources accounting for 27,5 % of our total electricity sales. The remaining 67,4% is purchased from the electricity exchange.

In 2025, the electricity we sold was produced using the following energy sources: 42,1 % renewable energy (water power, wind power, and bioenergy), 35,3 % fossil fuels, and 22.6% nuclear power.

The specific carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel-based electricity production were 235,26 g/kWh. The amount of spent nuclear fuel generated was 0.95 mg/kWh.
